You booked a flight, packed your bags, and then wondered: do I even need a visa? If you hold a Saudi passport, the answer depends heavily on the destination. Some countries allow Saudi citizens to enter with no advance paperwork. Others require an online authorisation, visa on arrival, or a full embassy application.
Henley Passport Index and VisaGuide.World publish different methodologies, but both show the Saudi passport continuing to improve. Henley-style rankings count destinations available without a prior embassy visa, including visa-free, visa on arrival and some electronic authorisations. Always verify the exact destination before booking non-refundable travel.
How Saudi Passport Travel Works
When travellers say "visa-free", they often mix three different entry types. The difference matters.
- Visa-free entry: you arrive, show your passport, and receive entry permission without paying for a visa in advance.
- Visa on arrival: you obtain the visa at the airport or border, usually with a fee and a short form.
- eVisa or ETA: you apply online before travel. There is usually no embassy visit, but you should not travel until approval is issued.
GCC Countries
For Saudi citizens, the easiest travel zone remains the GCC. UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman generally permit Saudi nationals to travel using national ID under GCC arrangements. Airlines or border officers may still request a passport in specific circumstances, so check before travel.
| Country | Entry note |
|---|---|
| UAE | GCC national ID accepted for Saudi citizens. |
| Kuwait | GCC national ID accepted. |
| Bahrain | GCC national ID accepted. |
| Qatar | GCC national ID accepted. |
| Oman | GCC national ID accepted. |

Visa on Arrival Destinations

| Indonesia | Visa on arrival or e-VOA, commonly 30 days plus one extension. |

Countries That Still Require a Full Visa
- United States: B1/B2 visa, DS-160 and interview route.
- Canada: visitor visa/TRV for Saudi nationals.
- Schengen Area: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and all Schengen countries require a Schengen visa for Saudi nationals.

Important Things to Know

- Visa-free does not mean unlimited stay. Check the allowed duration.
- Expats in Saudi Arabia do not use Saudi passport rules. Their nationality passport controls entry requirements.
- Children need their own passport and follow the same nationality rules.
