First-Time Traveller from Saudi Arabia?
What to Know Before You Go

A step-by-step checklist for passports, visas, documents, insurance and airport procedures.

Travelling internationally for the first time is exciting, but it can feel overwhelming. The easiest way to make it manageable is to handle the steps in the right order.

Step 1: Check Your Passport

Most countries expect at least 6 months passport validity from the travel date or planned departure. Check expiry before booking flights, hotels or visa appointments. If you need renewal, complete that first.

Step 2: Check Whether You Need a Visa

Saudi nationals should check the destination rule for the Saudi passport. Expats in Saudi Arabia should check the rule for their own nationality passport, not their Iqama alone.

For popular destinations such as the US, Schengen Europe, Canada, Australia and Japan, start the visa process early and avoid non-refundable bookings before approval.

Step 3: Organise Your Documents

  • Passport and copy.
  • Passport photos with white background.
  • Bank statements for 3 to 6 months.
  • Employment letter with role, salary and leave dates.
  • Hotel bookings and flight reservations.
  • Travel insurance certificate.
  • Visa approval or ETA/eVisa confirmation.

Step 4: Buy Travel Insurance

Schengen visas require travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage. For other destinations, insurance is still strongly recommended because medical care abroad can be expensive.

Step 5: Understand Airport Procedures

Departing Saudi Arabia

  • Arrive at least 3 hours before international flights.
  • Check in and drop baggage.
  • Pass immigration and security.
  • Watch gate screens for changes.

Arriving Abroad

  • Follow signs for passport control or immigration.
  • Present passport, visa and arrival documents.
  • Collect baggage.
  • Use the correct customs channel.

Practical Tips

  • Keep printed and digital copies of passport, visa, hotel and insurance.
  • Carry some local currency or a working travel card.
  • Activate roaming or buy an international SIM/eSIM.
  • Save the Saudi embassy contact in your destination country.
  • Download airline and hotel apps before travel.
