ETIAS is the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is designed for travellers from visa-exempt countries entering the Schengen Area and some related European destinations.
Does ETIAS Apply to Saudi Nationals Now?
No. Saudi nationals currently need a Schengen visa for travel to the Schengen Area. ETIAS applies only to travellers who do not need a Schengen visa. If Saudi Arabia becomes Schengen visa-free in the future, ETIAS may become relevant.
How ETIAS Will Work
- Apply online through the official EU ETIAS website.
- Approval is linked to the passport.
- Valid for multiple short stays, usually up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- The expected fee has increased in EU communications from the original EUR 7 proposal; travellers should check the official ETIAS page before launch.
When Will It Start?
The EU has delayed ETIAS several times and official guidance says the specific start date will be announced before launch. Travellers should rely on the official EU travel site, not third-party countdown pages.
What Saudi Travellers Should Do Now
Until a visa-free arrangement is officially confirmed, Saudi nationals should continue applying for Schengen visas for France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and the rest of the Schengen Area. Start 4 to 6 weeks before travel where possible.
